Erin Rooney, FCRH ’14, has signed on to play professional basketball in France for Arras Pays d’Artois Basket Féminin, a member of the Ligue Féminine de Basketball, Fordham announced Monday.
Rooney is the first woman from Fordham to sign a professional basketball contract since Lisa Carol signed a contract in 2007, Fordham said in a statement.
“We are really excited for Erin to play for one of the top programs in France,” Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley said. “The opportunity is a direct result of all of Erin’s hard work. She left her mark on Fordham basketball and I am confident she will do the same in the professional ranks.”
This past year, Rooney — who is originally from New Zeland — led her team to their first Atlantic 10 title, advancing Fordham to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in two decades.
Rooney was featured in The New York Times last March.
