Fordham’s College Democrats group will bring New York City Councilman James “Jimmy” Vacca — who represents the City Island, Pelham and Throgs Neck communities of the Bronx — to campus for an event on March 31 at 8:30 p.m. in Dealy Hally, room 308, the club confirmed.

“When we discovered our situation about the budget back in December, we wanted to quickly extend invitations to a number of politicians,” said Michael Billotti, GSB ’15, president of College Democrats. “Jimmy Vacca was near the top of our list because a number of our members got to meet him while working on the campaign for Ritchie Torres.”

Torres is the junior councilman who was elected to the council to represent the Belmont and Fordham areas by a crushing margin in November.

“From what I heard within the Torres camp, Vacca has spoken positively about [College Democrats’] help with the campaign,” Billotti said. “Vacca was also a front runner for City Council speaker.”

Vacca was re-elected to represent District 13 last November, capturing 83.4 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times. He currently serves as chair of the council’s Committee on Technology. Vacca is a life-long resident of the Bronx and first entered the City Council in 2006. He earned his bachelors degree from the State University of New York, and a Masters degree in urban studies from CUNY Queens College.
